Sad...

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died this morning, after reportedly suffering a massive heart attack in his Florida home last night.

Steinbrenner turned 80 on July 4 and said he was “feeling good” last week during a visit to the Yankees spring training grounds in Florida.

“The Boss,” as he is sometimes called, has owned the Yankees since 1973, though his declining health forced him to hand over day-to-day operations of the team to his sons Hal and Hank in 2007.

Under his ownership, the Yankees have appeared in the World Series 11 times, winning seven titles, including the 2009 championship.

Sad, sad…

One time when I was in college, I went down to the deli below my dorm to buy some bottled water, and there was this huge line…

But, you know, I didn’t mind waiting…

So, after about 10 minutes in line, this woman ran in and said she was in a crazy rush, and gathered up about $60 worth of deli fare (which isn’t easy) and proceeded to wait for her turn at the register.

Since I had nothing to do, I offered for her to cut me on line (which made everyone behind me hate my guts immediately), and she gladly accepted, then told me to pick up everything in the store that I thought I might “need for the week”…

I couldn’t really think of anything, so I picked up the “expensive” quilted toilet paper and a package of Twinkies, and she paid for them, along with all of my other stuff…

I told her she didn’t have to be so generous, and she said, “Oh, you like the Yankees?”, and I said “Sort of, I’m gay…”…

And she responded, “Oh, my uncle’s George Steinbrenner, we got plenty of dough…”, then she jumped into an idling SUV…

Best toilet paper and Twinkies, ever.

This is so, so sad…

“Golden Girl” Rue McClanahan, 76, has died.

McClanahan, who played Blanche Deveraux on the still-popular ’80s sitcom “Golden Girls”, had suffered a minor stroke earlier this year while recovering from bypass surgery.

Her manager, Barbara Lawrence added that at the time of her death Thursday, McClanahan “had her family with her. She went in peace.”

“The Golden Girls” is, and will always be, the best and most revolutionary tv show of all time, and Rue was a huge part of that magic…

Usually, I dislike being serious about anything, but not having Rue McClanahan on this planet is a major loss…

Sad, sad day.

Lena Horne, 1928-2010

Aw, this is so sad.

Lena Horne, the ground-breaking singer, actress and civil rights activist who, in 1942, became the first African-American performer to be put under contract by a major studio, passed away yesterday at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York.

“I was always battling the system to try to get to be with my people. Finally, I wouldn’t work for places that kept us out. … It was a damn fight everywhere I was, every place I worked, in New York, in Hollywood, all over the world,” she said.

Lena Horne’s contribution to both the world of entertainment, as well as the struggle for civil rights is unparalleled…

“I don’t have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I’d become,” Horne once said. “I’m me, and I’m like nobody else.”

Damn right.

I’m a sap for Lena Horne, and not having her on this planet is a major loss…

Malcolm McLaren, 1946 – 2010

Aw, man…

This is a sad day…

One of the father’s of the punk music scene, Malcolm McLaren, passed away of cancer today in New York at the age of 64.

Malcolm McLaren first came to prominence as the notorious manager of the Sex Pistols, the premier punk rock band of the late ’70s.

His reputation as a manager established, McLaren began looking for other British talent to handle, briefly settling on the then-unknown Adam Ant before spiriting away Ant’s backing band and using it to support a 14-year-old Burmese singer he had discovered, Annabella Lwin, in a band called Bow Wow Wow.

The band broke up in 1983, though not before McLaren tried adding a second singer, George O’Dowd, later known as “Boy George”…

Amazing, right?

Although, in many cases Malcolm was the man behind the musical successes of others, I happen to love his own solo work as well.

John Forstythe, 1918 - 2010

Man, this is shitty, shitty news.

John Forsythe passed away yesterday morning at home in Beverly Hills from pneumonia at the age of 92…

Forsythe starred in three television series, spanning three decades, as single playboy father “Bentley Gregg” in the 1950s sitcom Bachelor Father, the unseen millionaire “Charles Townsend” on the 1970s crime drama Charlie’s Angels, and as ruthless and beloved patriarch “Blake Carrington” on the 1980s soap opera Dynasty.

Here he is, talking a crazy woman down so she doesn’t throw his daughter’s baby off a roof.

Sadly, he fails.

Luckily, it wasn’t a real baby.

He’ll be missed. xo

Peter Graves, star of Mission: Impossible and (my personal favorite) Airplane! has passed away at the age of 83…

Peter died of a heart attack at his home in Pacific Palisades, only a few days short of his 84th birthday, which is this coming Thursday…

I’ll always love Peter, not so much because of his star-making role in Mission: Impossible (I didn’t watch that because I’m gay), but mostly because of this one scene from Airplane! that I’ve posted below.

And yes, Peter, I’d still kick it with you in Turkish prison. Any day, baby…

Corey Haim, 1971-2010

Aw, this is so sad…

80’s teen idol Corey Haim has passed away at the age of 38…

Honestly, if you didn’t see License to Drive and weren’t immediately in love with Corey, you weren’t part of a generation…

Haim was born in Canada. He starred or co-starred in a number of films such as Lucas, Murphy’s Romance, The Lost Boys, License to Drive and Dream a Little Dream.

Most notably, he collaborated numerous times with Corey Feldman, the pair being dubbed “The Two Coreys.” Haim and Feldman starred in a TV ‘reality’ show titled The Two Coreys, which aired on the A&E Network from 2007 to 2008…

Corey’s cause of death has been deemed an accidental overdose by the LAPD…

So sad. Rest in peace.

Alexander McQueen, 1969-2010

Born in the East End of London, the son of a taxi driver, McQueen started making dresses for his three sisters at a young age and announced his intention of becoming a fashion designer.

McQueen said that one of his earliest memories was from around the age of 3 when he drew a picture of a dress on a piece of bare wall which had been exposed by peeling wallpaper in the council house where his family lived.

McQueen jokingly called it his first design sketch. Rest in peace.

Zelda Rubinstein (which, I’m actually relatively positive is also the name of one of my great aunts ), best known as Tangina “the magic midget” from Poltergeist, passed away early this morning at the age of 76.

I’m sad she’s gone into the light…

Zelda’s agent tells us that she died of natural causes at Barlow Respiratory Hospital in Los Angeles after she was hospitalized two months ago for a heart attack.

I’ll always love Zelda (well, this Zelda and my great aunt)… I think she was one of kind…

Well, two of a kind, if you count my great aunt…

Rest in peace, Zelda… I’ll see you whenever I press my hands against a static-y television…

Teddy Pendergrass, 1950 - 2010.

Legendary soul singer, Teddy Pendergrass passed away this morning at the age of 59.

This is a sad, sad day for anyone who’s ever heard Teddy sing.

Honestly, I’d go ahead and say he’s probably responsible for about 45% of all pregnancies taking place post 1970. The man was an absolute icon and true talent.

If you’ve never experienced Mr. Pendergrass, take a listen to his 1973 panty-exciter, “Close The Door” and just try not to hump your computer…
